“I'm not upset that you lied to me, I'm upset that from now on I can't believe you.” |
Atlas's wish, of course, was influenced by his first bad experience with his friends. By the one time at which he was told that his world was full of people you cannot trust, and that everybody has the capability to lie to you at one time or another. This is the story of Atlas, and how he wished he could no longer be hurt by the false words of his friend.

As a younger pup, Atlas was full of friends. One friend out of them all was his very favourite... let's call him K. K and Atlas were the best of friends, inseparable, and loyal to each other as a dog to its master. Never did K lie to Atlas, and Atlas returned the favour with love and trust. They were the true incarnation of a good friendship, they were, until one day, K's temptations took over his love for his friend, and hurt him for the rest of his life.
Of course, you should expect someone as friendly as K to have other friends, and he did! He hung out with them when he wasn't busy with Atlas, but he never did get around to telling his good, starry, and completely trustworthy starry friend of his socialisation in his free time. Atlas thought that K was just out and about with his everyday things, but he wasn't. He was having more fun than ever. More fun than he had with Atlas. One day, K was invited by the mako group, which he kept hidden from Atlas so well, to a fun little trip to the uninhabited islands of the ocean. Nobody could turn down this trip, but K had something to fix first. He had to get his friend off of his back before confirming with the others, and so he did. "Atlas, I won't be here for all next week, so don't worry if I'm not here, okay?" K asked, awfully confident. He wasn't lying, so Atlas acted as if he were telling the truth. "Really? Why? Where are you going? Weren't you and your family going to have a picnic in the weekend?" Atlas asked, beginning to get slightly worried by the words of his friend. Was there something he wasn't telling him? Of course, on K's part, this had just gotten a bit harder. He had forgotten about that picnic. "Oh, yeah, it was canceled, now we're going on a trip for the entire week!" The voice of K's that had once tasted like sweet key lime pie shocked Atlas with a sour taste. |
"Are you lying to me?" Atlas asked, hoping for the truth. However, the mako he had thought of as his trustworthy friend only lied some more.
"No! Why would I ever lie to you?" K asked, trying to get away from Atlas now that he had been caught. "Anyways.... I have to go, bye." And with that, K left on his trip to the islands. I bet he had fun, a good trip it must have been, but with terrible consequences. His best friend, the most loyal mako he had ever met, was gone forever, and so was a lot of his trust.
Trust is easier lost that gained, and both makos learnt this on that day. The whereabouts of K are unknown to this day, but they will forever leave a bitter hole in Atlas's heart. The fact that he could no longer trust his best friend had injured him, and taken his ability to trust to where it was barely existent. And yet, even when he manages to trust a mako, or love, even, he knows that even those closest to him are capable of lies. Lies, and betrayal, and the horror of knowing you could not believe their words anymore.
Perhaps...
Perhaps, if he had never tasted that sour lemon taste, he may not have been hurt as much.
Perhaps, if he could no longer tell if someone lied to him, he may trust once more.
Perhaps, if K had never lied, the two may still be happy today.
Perhaps, just perhaps, if it hadn't been for thatsour taste, the two could be friends again.
